Buckingham County

Buckingham County was created in 1782 from a portion of Bedford County.  With a population of 17,004 residents, Buckingham County contains some 79,000 acres of farmland across 408 farms.  Now the 12th largest of Virginia’s 132 counties and independent cities, the county is bordered by the James River to the west and north and Appomattox River to the south.

The county is home to James River State Park and Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest, Virginia’s largest state forest.

"We abuse land because we see it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect.”
