how to save your land

Many people in central Virginia own acres of rural land used for farming, forestry, hunting or just their own enjoyment. In some cases, their land has been passed down in their family for generations, and it has great personal meaning.

Sometimes people worry about what will become of their land when they’re gone. Hundreds of families in central  Virginia have chosen to make sure their land stays in its rural or natural state forever through conservation easements. These are voluntary, permanent agreements between landowners and land trusts like the Central Virginia Ridge Land Conservancy that describe how the land can be used in the future.

"We abuse land because we see it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect.”
